Name: Michelle Dawes

Job location: Broward General Hospital, 4 North Tower

Doreste: What is your career today?
Dawes: RN.
Doreste: So, did is that what you always wanted to be?
Dawes: Yes.
Doreste: Do you think that there will be many job openings for an RN in the upcoming future?
Dawes: Of course, If youhaven’t yet heard, there is a great shortage of nurses through out the United States, hospitals now are searching for nurses with experience.
Doreste: Are there any ways to ensure success while in school for that profession?
Dawes: Well, the main things that you can do to prepare yourself for this career are to seek internships or even think about volunteering at a local hospital. You won’t get paid for it but it will surly help you advance and find out if that’s what you really want to do for the rest of your life.
Doreste: What obstacles did you face to get to where you are today?
Dawes: I had to learn to have patience, cultural diversity and people’s personalities. There are many different types of people and personalities that you are going to have to run into, you must be careful of what you say and how you act towards a patient. You must also always remember that you are a professional working in the work place.
Doreste: What are some of the requirements for your career?
Dawes: Learning Sciences, math and NSG care classes.
Doreste: How long did it take you to get to your career?
Dawes: Four years.
Doreste: Was the process easy or difficult?
Dawes: Difficult, study, study and more studying. I can remember the sleepless nights and sometimes I didn’t get sleep at all from just studying and making sure no one else takes my place.
Doreste: Is your career easier than what you thought it was going to be?
Dawes: A little but both at times, there are days that are very stressful but in this profession we have sick people coming in every day and we must tend to their needs.
Doreste: Do you enjoy what you do everyday?
Dawes: Yes, just seeing the patients faces light up every day you come into their rooms and you know that you are making a difference by helping others.
Doreste: If you had an opportunity to be in any other career field, what would it be and why?
Dawes: Teaching because of the reward of passing on knowledge to others.
